Vanilla planifolia otherwise known as Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla (named after two islands in the Indian ocean noted for cultivating the crop) is an orchid grown in humid tropic climate. It is cultivated mostly along the Indian Ocean, especially Madagascar, Réunion (formerly known as Bourbon), Comoros, French Polynesia and Indonesia, though it originated from Mexico. Indonesia and Madagascar supply about 70% of the world’s vanilla bean. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) is by far the most popular of the 3 cultivated vanilla species – Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla tahitiensis and Vanilla pompona.
